Students at The Yutzy School are lighting up their understanding of science through an engaging, hands-on project that brings electricity to life.
As part of the TYS Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) program, students recently explored the fundamentals of circuits by designing and building their own using paper, tinfoil, small batteries, and LED lights.
During the school’s science unit on electricity, students constructed closed circuit models, incorporating makeshift switches that allowed them to turn their lights on and off. By experimenting with different configurations, they discovered how adding extra batteries increased brightness and how to design circuits with both straight runs and multiple turns.
This interactive project lays the groundwork for their next challenge—working with the Makey Makey, an innovative circuit board that will push students to apply their newfound knowledge in creative and exciting ways throughout the semester.
"This project is a perfect example of our approach to STEAM education at The Yutzy School," said Dr. Ric Mitchell, Head of School. "Our students aren’t just learning science—they’re doing science. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their curiosity and problem-solving skills in action."
By incorporating hands-on activities like this, The Yutzy School emphasizes discovery-based learning, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration.
